On Kodiak's southwest coast, the village of Karluk sits astride the Karluk River, where more than thirty registered petroglyph sites can be found. The landscape is characterized by low-lying mountains cut by rivers and streams. While fishing remains very strong in the Karluk region, especially for fall runs of silver salmon and steelhead, the number of guided fishermen allowed on the river for the king salmon fishing season is currently controlled. Permits for non-guided fisherman are free and easily drawn.
