Gakona

Gakona is located in the center of Copper Valley at the confluence of the Copper and Gakona Rivers. The world-famous Copper River is the fourth largest in Alaska and the only one to carve its way through the Chugach Mountains.

When visiting Gakona you can enjoy fishing the area’s lakes or rivers for trout and super-sized salmon, see a fishwheel in action or experience the thrill of river rafting, ranging from a mellow family float to remote whitewater adventure.

Groceries, natural foods, hardware, clothing, sporting goods, propane, ice and gas are available at the trading post at Gakona Lodge, one of only two remaining historic road houses in Alaska. The Lodge has rooms, cabins and tipis, a restaurant and tavern.

The High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP) array, an ionospheric research project jointly funded by the U.S. Air Force, the U.S. Navy, the University of Alaska and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency is located near Gakona.
