Location: On western shore of Lake Athabaska and eastern boundary of Wood Buffalo National Park, Fort Chipewyan is accessible by winter road, chartered river transportation and by scheduled air service with Air Mikisew out of Fort McMurray, Alberta.
From the western shores of Lake Athabasca, Fort Chipewyan is the all season launching point for authentic aboriginal culture experience and eco-adventuring tours into Wood Buffalo National Park, the Athabaska, Peace and Slave River regions. Locally, visitors can learn about the 200+ year history of Alberta’s oldest community with a visit to the Fort Chipewyan Bicentennial Museum or the Roman Catholic Church, which features murals, painted in local blueberry and cranberry juice mixed with fish oils. There are more than 30 other museums and historic sites in this region.
