Hamilton was founded in 1890 by Irish immigrant and copper ore king Marcus Daly, who had a 22,000 acre stock farm in the Bitterroot Valley. He laid out his own town along the Northern Pacific Railroad route, with plots for churches, parks and businesses. Calamity Jane ran a cafe on Main Street at the wild and prosperous turn of the century.
About 30 miles south of Hamilton, off Highway 93 between the small towns of Connor and Sula, historic Medicine Hot Springs has recently been renovated and offers a delightful soak for their cabin guests. Lost Trail Powder Mountain ski area is another 20 minutes south, located near where the Lewis and Clark Expedition passed over the mountains. |
