SKAGWAY TO WHITEHORSE

The Klondike Highway starts at the Tidewater Village of Skagway and rises over the next 14 miles inland to a summit elevation of 3,290 feet.  The highway, which was built in the 1950s but not fully linked to Skagway until 1978, climbs through the breathtaking beauty of the Skagway Valley rich with lush plant growth and cascading waterfalls. The entire road follows the trail of the gold stampeders of 1898. Open year round, it connects Skagway, Alaska with Dawson City and the Klondike gold fields. The southern portion of the Klondike Highway passes through Carcross and joins up with the Alaska Highway 1 just south of Whitehorse.
